Women In Business

8th March 2018

Women In Business

8th March is a day to celebrate women.

It is a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women, throughout history and across nations.

Although there have been days recognising the contribution of women since around 1909, it became internationally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977.

The day commemorates the sacrifices made throughout time by various women’s rights movements, in search of gender equality.

One of the recurring themes within International Women’s Day, especially in recent years, has been women in the workplace. Therefore, we decided to use this week’s blog to speak to a woman who has made her own way in business – Red Berry Recruitment’s MD Helen Lacey.

Having been in business 11 years, Helen has faced challenges throughout the growth of Red Berry – building it from just one office to now employing 20 staff spread across Shepton Mallet, Yeovil, Bridgwater and Cardiff.

When asked about women in business, Helen said “particularly in networking and at events and business conferences, it is extremely male-dominated. Although I don’t personally, I can understand why some women feel intimidated.”

She continued “Men tend to be a lot more confident in their positions, and will shout about their achievements a lot more, whereas women tend to be more withdrawn. Some women feel like they have imposter syndrome – like they don’t belong in that position.”

“I feel like women need a lot more confidence and strength to hold their own in business settings, especially with some of the comments that come from some men.”

Helen, who is one of just three women to have made the Business Leaders Magazine’s Top 50 South-West Entrepreneurs, finished by saying “I love to see more and more women are starting their own businesses, or climbing to higher roles within their business, and love to actively encourage and support them”.

Are you a woman in business in Somerset? There are some great groups you can join, such as Somerset Ladies in Business, who provide networking opportunities for businesswomen.

International Women’s Day is a great cause, and it is very important to continue fighting for gender equality.
