‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’ by Rosie Stevens, Industrial and Technical Consultant - Yeovil Office

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush is just one of those old sayings that your grandma used to say when she felt as though you may well just be getting ideas above your station, or about to take on a challenge that would exceed the boundaries she thought you would be capable of – right? But the more you think about it, the more you can apply it to a variety of scenarios and situations you may find yourself in – perhaps even when you are considering entering the murky waters of becoming a job seeker! With the jobs market becoming more buoyant than it has been since the most recent economic recession, this may be one piece of grandmas advice you should be contemplating ignoring in 2014. Had you asked me this time two years ago – even perhaps one year ago – I would have agreed that the proverbial saying, putting a positive spin on having something certain which may be lesser, or taking a gamble on something greater which may come to nothing, was certainly one to take heed of, when considering a potential job move. But with clients now offering better salaries, packages and benefits then we have seen in the last couple of years, and jobs that were previously made redundant or overloaded onto one poor hardworking individual, performing 3 people’s jobs in an unforgiving 60 hour week, are back on the market in full force! So if your current role is no longer making you happy, if you need a new challenge, or if you simply fancy dipping your toe in the aforementioned murky waters, whilst she is never wrong about good table manners and hot toddies (medically proven of course) it may well pay you to distract grandma with the old packet of Werther’s Original at the bottom of her handbag, whilst you go forth and find your ‘something greater’
