Blog Post: First Impressions by Emily Rutherford - Administrator/Resourcer, Shepton Mallet Office

One thing I’ve learnt since working in recruitment is that first impressions count. Career success can come down to the first moments of meeting someone, it can be the make or break of your career.

Working on the front desk of a busy recruitment office, I meet our candidates for the first time. Within seconds of meeting someone I can tell if the person really wants a job or if they don’t care. When a job vacancy is available and I am looking for the perfect candidate, who am I going to remember the person who came into the office with a bad attitude or the person who was well dressed, was well spoken and really made an effort.

When looking for work I think it’s vital to make a positive first impression. It’s important to dress smart, as a good appearance can determine what people think of us, sometimes it’s what’s on the outside that counts. What is on the inside is also crucial, nothing works better than having and expressing a positive attitude.

People have been conditioned over the years to unconsciously judge others but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your first impression count!
