How To Find The Perfect Recruit

In last week’s blog we provided some advice on how to find your dream job. There are many different options for job seekers, as there are for employers looking for staff. Job boards, social media and recruitment agencies are the three most effective methods of recruitment.

Of course, the same applies to those looking for staff. Businesses are continuing to grow. A recent study from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) found that 97% of businesses are planning on hiring this year.

However, recruiting staff is a not an easy process. It takes time and money to find the perfect recruit – even for larger companies with HR departments.

There are obviously many ways to recruit. Most companies will have their preferred method of doing so. However, some businesses may be looking to recruit for the first time due to a period of growth, or are looking to improve their recruiting. Here, we look at the pros and cons of the three major ways of recruiting.

Job Boards

Online job boards such as Indeed, Reed or CV Library can act as de facto recruitment hubs for employers. They provide a space to place adverts at a cost to you, which directly reach job seekers. They then send any applicants’ CV’s through to you. This is a relatively cheap method of getting your opening out to a wide range of potential applicants.

However, they have their drawbacks. Most adverts will be time limited, meaning you will have to renew the advert if you fail to find a suitable candidate. They are also time-consuming, you will need to sift through all the CV’s you receive – and there is no guarantee that any of them will be the right match.

These are ideal for those recruiting on a one off basis. They allow you to pay to advertise one job, provide a spot for you to reach all potential candidates and can work out as comparatively cheaper.

Social Media

This is the cheapest way of advertising jobs: it’s free! You can post your role on your Facebook or your Twitter or your LinkedIn or a video on your YouTube channel, completely free of charge. On Facebook, there are many local groups of job hunters you can post in, or industry specific groups. You can also tag your post to make it more relevant.

The major problem with using social media, is you generally rely on others to reach a larger audience. Your posts will only reach the followers you have, or those directly searching for it, unless your followers share it to their networks. You can however pay to promote your posts, in order to get around this.

Recruitment Agencies

Ok, so we may be slightly biased here, but…

Recruitment agencies are the simplest and most cost effective way of recruiting staff. We will advertise your vacancy across job boards, social media and our website. We will also search job boards and our CRM system to find suitable candidates. Having done this, as well as sorting through the CV’s received, we will present you with the best applicants. You will then be able to shortlist your preferred candidates, before we arrange interviews. Recruitment agencies act as a middle man between employer and employee. This makes the whole process easier and less time consuming for you. Though the price can sometimes be more expensive, they save costs and time in other areas for you.

In terms of the most effective method for you, it will depend on your company. Each business has its own unique requirements and needs, and the recruitment process must fit around these.
