It All Starts With You

It All Starts With You

“The price of greatness is responsibility ”
– Winston Churchill

Consider with me some scenarios that could happen in anyone’s daily life:

1) Your alarm doesn’t go off in the morning, you wake up at 7:32 (I know – an odd number) and must leave the house in 10 minutes

2) One of your team mates accidentally deletes an important spreadsheet that has a lot of data needed for a presentation later that day

3) You have been working hard on a presentation on your laptop – you pop for a quick toilet break and – when you return- one of your children have drawn a smiley face on your slide (to make it less boring!) – this is a true story and will return to it at the end of this blog 😊

I am sure you can all add hundreds of your own things that can go ‘wrong’ daily however, my intent with this blog isn’t to dwell in the wrongness of life but to start to encourage you to think about your thinking.

So with the above situations, think about the options open to you. For example:

1) Your alarm doesn’t go off in the morning, you wake up at 7:32 (I know- an odd number) and must leave the house in 10 minutes.

Options –

A) Swear loudly while running down the stairs ‘hopping’ into your trousers/dress whilst playing a mantra in your head of ‘this always happens to me’

B) Call in sick – try again tomorrow.

C) Realise that sometimes these things happen, get up and get on with your day.

What other options are available to you?

For the scenarios above – or indeed one of your own – take a moment to think about the options that could be available to you.

Chances are if you are still with me then you could be waiting for what is known in the business as ‘the point’ – some pearl of wisdom that will radically change your life. Trust me we will get there, but for now I pose you a question:

How often do you think about your thoughts? I am sure that you think a lot of stuff, some of it ground breaking, some of it less so, some of your thinking may happen at the ungodly hour of 2am when you don’t want to be thinking… these thoughts are the things that are creating the world around you so its important that we get you thinking about this.

The point here is that your thoughts are your responsibility, you have to be in charge of them or they could take charge of you.

As an example, if you are always thinking thoughts like “this always happens to me”, “I am no good”, or any other unhelpful thought, then any of the scenarios above could result in an unhelpful action or behaviour. If you start from this point, going forward challenge yourself to think helpful/positive thoughts – you are more likely to have a more helpful output to a tricky scenario.

When something unwanted happens, my encouragement to you all is that you aim to increase the gap between the stimulus and the response (from the work of the great Stephen Covey).

My coaching to you is to put a powerful question in here, this will help you move from reactive to proactive, and will give you a better response…

An example…

Stimulus – one of your team mates accidentally deletes an important spreadsheet that has a lot of data needed for a presentation later that day

Powerful Question – “what can this teach me?”

Thoughts – losing my temper wont help/I am sure my team mate wouldn’t do this on purpose/I need to learn about backing up my spreadsheets etc.

Response – calm, cool and collected – asking for help to restore the spreadsheet and its data.

Taking charge of your thoughts is true responsibility and as good old Winston put it – the start of your journey towards greatness.

So my invitation to you is to think about your thoughts, and through practise take charge of them.

Oh and back to option 3 at the beginning – here is the slide that I returned to where my kids had drawn on it, I had some choices – the one I went with was to leave the slide in and use it to enhance my overall presentation. Here it is in all its glory!
