The Recruitment Process

Recruitment agencies act as a ‘middle-man’ between those who want staff and those who are looking for work.

From our point of view, we look to simplify the process for both sides. For the employer, it saves them the time and resources. For the candidate, it provides them clarity and a contact.

So recruiters can oversee the process from start to finish. But how does it work?

How does it start?

Firstly, the employer and the recruitment agency will be in contact. This can be initiated by either party: the agency’s consultant could offer to assist on the role, or the employer could get in contact with the agency requesting help.

The employer will give the consultant information on the type of person required and the role – in the form of a job description or specification. They will also provide the agency with information on the company itself, so that they can give the candidates a better idea of what it’s like to work there. Sometimes, the consultant will visit the office, factory or premises in order to get a better feel for it.

They will then agree on a fee for the placement, usually dictated by the salary. In the case of Red Berry Recruitment, it is an hourly rate for temporary workers or a percentage of the first year’s salary for permanent placements.

Once all this is agreed and the consultant is up to date with the role and what the employer is looking for, the consultant begins the search.

The job will be advertised on the agency’s website, as well as various job boards.

The Application

After the job is advertised, a candidate will apply for it, by contacting the agency. Alternatively, the agency may find their profile on LinkedIn or a job board and contact them.

The consultant – or a Resourcer – will call the candidate to screen them, finding out about their skills, experience and qualifications whilst giving them more information on the role itself.

If both parties are satisfied, the consultant will send the applicants details through to the hiring manager at the employer. For permanent roles, if they like what they see, the process moves on to interview stage. For temporary placements, many employers are happy to take the candidate on without the need to meet them first, however some still do.

Interview Stage

The consultant will act as a go between for both the employer and the potential employee, organising a time and date for the interview.

They will also prep the candidate on anything they need to bring, the expected format of the interview and any other details they required.

The candidate and employer will then meet for the first time through the interview, allowing the employer to gauge whether the candidate is the right fit and the candidate to decide whether the role interests them.

The consultant will then contact both parties to get their feedback, sharing it with the other.

In some cases – normally for more senior level roles – there will be a second interview stage, so this process will be repeated.

More commonly, it will move to offer or rejection stage.

Offer or Rejection

Once they have made their mind up, the hiring manager will contact the recruitment agency to inform them of the decision, giving the reasons behind the choice.

It is then down to the consultant to break the news to the successful – and unsuccessful – candidates.

For those who didn’t get the job, most recruitment agencies will keep their details on file and get in contact if any more suitable roles come up.

For the new employee, the consultant will help to agree the terms of employment, including salary and start date, with their new employer. Once this is agreed and contracts are signed, the consultant will stay in contact with both parties until and beyond the employee has started their new role, ensure a smooth transition.

In the case of Red Berry Recruitment, only then will fees begin being paid.

That is the four major stages of the recruitment process summed up. Of course, each role is its own intricacies and differences. However, on the whole, most placements will follow that pattern.
