Why temporary work?

4th October 2018

Why temporary work?

There are many reasons why.

Temporary work can be beneficial to both parties: employer and employee.

It offers flexibility, is relatively inexpensive and can be convenient.

Here, we explain the reasons and benefits of temporary assignments for both clients and candidates.

From an employer’s point of view, making a role temporary could be down to various reasons.

It may be that the role has only been created to complete a task or series of tasks. The assignment could be something that takes one week, one month or a year. It may also be that the company is going through a busy period. They may need relief staff to ease pressure on their permanent employees.

Another reason an employer may require temporary staff is to cover another employee’s absence. It may be a couple of week holiday or a long period for sickness or maternity. Regardless, it is useful to bring in a temporary member of staff to cover their workload. If this is the case, it may be necessary to get a temporary worker in who has experience or skills in the topic.

The final main reason for offering a temporary role is that the work may be ad hoc. Consistent, permanent work may be unavailable, so they require staff for various shifts. This is quite common in warehouse and production roles.

For a candidate, gaining temporary work can be hugely beneficial.

Sometimes, temporary work can be a useful way into permanent employment. That could be through getting an ‘in’ with the company, with the hope of the temporary role becoming permanent. Or it could be to build experience and keep money coming in whilst they look for a different permanent role.

Temporary work also offers more flexibility to a candidate, especially if it is on an ad hoc basis. It may be that they need to do different shifts each week. Lots of temporary work would allow them to do that.

For students, especially, temporary work is useful through their summer holidays. It allows them to earn money without the restrictions of permanent work.
